Staverton, Suffolk - 'The Thicks'


Located in rural Suffolk not far from the Rendlesham Forest is the ancient woodlands at Staverton. Part of this remarkable habitat is known as, 'The Thicks'. It is an area within Staverton Woods where the management of the pollarded oaks was abandoned long ago, leaving the resulting woodland of oak, holly, rowan and birch to compete. Oliver Rackham described this special site as, 'a place of Tolkienesque wonder and beauty' ('The History of the Countryside'). 

Although no photograph of mine can begin to capture the experience of walking through 'The Thicks', here are some images that, hopefully, evoke something of the magical atmosphere of this special place...
