Wymondham: Fairland United Reform Church

I visit Wymondham fairly regularly, but it was only very recently that I noticed the Fairland United Reform Church and resolved to pay a visit when I got a chance. That opportunity arose this morning. I had a work meeting in the town and then - with a pleasant blue sky and a gentle lick of warm sunshine - I decided the time was right to explore the chapel grounds.

Although the original Fairland Congregational Church on this site was founded in 1662, the facade you see here was added in 1877.

Viewing the building from the adjoining graveyard, you can clearly see a vertical line and a change in brick colour that indicates two distinct phases of construction. The lighter toned brick to the left of the photograph is, presumably, the 1715 rebuild of the original church, with the red-hued brick to the right, an extension dating from 1815.

Faced with a small and ageing congregation the future of the church as a place of worship is probably not viable. However, in November 2022 the church elders were working to ensure its future as a social enterprise. I have no idea how those plans are progressing, but I wish them every success in their endeavour.

Having explored the churchyard, I would really like to take a look inside at some point. If I do, I will be sure to share the experience with you here.

Postscript: proximate to the graveyard is an enchanting community garden which you can explore HERE
