Weston Longville, All Saints: A Stunning Sedilia!

On the south wall of the chancel in All Saints, Weston Longville, Norfolk, is a very fine stone sedilia full of characterful faces peeping out from the canopy above the seats.

Functionally, a sedilia provides seating for the priest, deacon and sub-deacon as well as - in an Anglican church - a piscina in which to wash the communion vessels. However, as with this beautifully composed example, these are often so much more aesthetically. Here, there are five pillars, elegantly curved ogee arches fringed with foliate carving and, above, a handsome carved canopy. This is a beauty!
